Dr. Raymond, although retired, continues the application of his award winning work (1995 North American Geosynthetics Society's Grand Award, U.S.$12,000; Best paper award Geotexiles and Geomembranes, 2000; Award of Merit for Outstanding Achievement 1999 from North American Geosynthetics Society; plus D. Walters was the winner of best student paper at Geosynthetics '99) on geosynthetic reinforcement in layered soils.
In 1982 Dr. Raymond was awarded the Queen's University Prize for Excellence in Research.
Citation: Gerald Patrick Raymond has been a member of the
Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University since 1962 during
which time he has undertaken research on the stability and consolidation
of sensitive soils such as muskeg, and leda clays. During the past
decade his work has been directed toward the analysis of railroad track
support systems including both ballast and ties. His activities in this
latter area have become internationally recognized to the extent that
the results of his research have been incorporated in railroad track
structure design modifications in Canada, Australia and the U.S.A. Dr.
Raymond's work has been widely acclaimed by geotechnical engineers and
he has stimulated much interest among students in the field of railroad
transportation engineering — an area of engineering extremely important
to the Canadian economy.
He is a registered Professional Engineer and before retirement held a Certificate of Authorization in Ontario. He has been a consultant to Transportation Systems Centre (U.S. D.O.T), Bechtel (San Francisco), Central Technology (Washington. D.C.), Arthur D. Little (Boston), Meuser Rutledge Johnson and Desimone (New York), Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company (USA), Canadian Forest Products Limited (Canada), Morrison Hershfield Ltd. (Canada), Transportation Ministry (Lybian Government), Education Ministry (Egyption Government) and Inco (Canada).
Dr. Raymond is a Research Director of the GeoEngineering Centre Queen's-RMC where he helps the Centre's research but no longer supports Graduate Students directly.
